Pheasant Branch

I decided to work on this further at home.  Still not sure it's working, but I'm a bit happier with it than I was the other night.   Simplified the foreground tree as per Tom's suggestion (probably could do more), and got rid of an extraneous bush that was awkwardly placed.  I'm still not sure if the sky is working - I definitely struggled with the fact that the view faced west.  I'm not sure how to deal with the bright glare of the low sun - next time I'll try to pick a view opposite the sun!

  1. It does look better, quite nice in fact. I think this is one of my favorite paintings of yours, that I've seen, at least. I think the soft sky works well. I do wonder if a few more intense highlights in the sky would help it, but that might be risky. I've been looking at a lot of Peter Wileman paintings lately. He's a painter from England who paints sunset skies quite well, and usually with bright highlights.

  2. I forgot to add that I was checking out some painter's web page and noticed he had an instructional dvd on how to paint looking into the sun. Might be interesting. If only I could remember the painter's name.

  3. Thanks so much, Tom! Guess I won't scrap it :) Yes, I know what you mean about more intense highlights. Not sure how to achieve that. I added a very tiny bit of cad orange to my white to try to complement the blue gray of the clouds, but i think it still needs more 'something'. Keep me posted if you think of the painter who did the dvd - I would really like to know how to achieve a better effect.
