CamRoc revisited

A year ago the DCPAPAs met at CamRoc Park and painted for the morning. It was green and lush and beautiful. I started this painting and finished it in the studio. I was really happy with it as it conveyed the feelings I had about the park.

This year I painted in the same spot but by now, November, most of the leaves were down but it was still a beautiful day and a gorgeous park. I was experimenting with the Anders Zorn palette of ivory black, cad red, yellow ochre and white. I did cheat and used a tiny bit of cad yellow. The sky and water are just black and white.

  1. Jan, I enlarged your images to see them easier. Hope that's okay, and if you haven't noticed, once you add an image in a post, you can click on the image and it gives options for sizing. These are the extra large size. All of these are great but I'm most surprised with how nice CamRoc 2 worked out. I saw you as you were working on this and (to be honest) thought it wasn't working out so well, but then I see this and see how you fixed it up to an exceptional fine quality. I need to figure out how you do this!

    1. Thanks, Tom. CamRoc 2 just needed a little more paint. I like to get the gist of it down on site. Later when I look at it off site, I can concentrate on what the painting needs instead of worrying about how accurate it is.

  2. Thanks for sharing these, Jan. Great idea of super limited palette and interesting that in doing that you could see exactly what other color was needed. I think it's a great way to learn about each color and how it interacts with the others.

    1. Thanks, Pat. I do like the limited palette though I'm not convinced that Zorn's is the way to go. I've done a few paintings with olive green, cad red light and ultramarine blue. I will try some others along the way.

  3. Wow! These are beautiful, Jan!! I especially like CamRock 2. I've also experimented with the Zorn palette in the past and really like the colors/mood I can get with it, especially for fall paintings. Sometimes I've used WN Blue Black in place of Ivory Black if I want to get more variety with my greens (I think it's a convenience mix of ultramarine and ivory black), but your paintings look great with just the ivory black.

  4. Thanks, Jan! I like the idea of a different black, though I was surprised that the ivory black read as if it was blue when mixed with white. I think I will try some different yellow ochres, too.
