Rescheduled Outing to 10/26

I previously set up a plein air outing on this coming Tuesday, 10/25.  But the forecast now calls for clouds and rain on Tuesday, so let’s switch this to Wednesday, 10/26.  And same place (Indian Lake County Park) and time (about 3pm start).

October 25 - Indian Lake County Park

Things haven’t quite worked out for an outing this week but I’m going to schedule what might be our last outing of the season, considering how the weather has turned.

Let’s paint on Tuesday, October 25, starting at 3pm, at Indian Lake County Park.  The meeting area will be the primary large parking lot and the nearby shelter.  I might bring some firewood and build a fire in the shelter fire pit if anyone wants to hang around a bit after we paint.  There is a bathroom there.  I know we’ve painted many times at Indian Lake but it’s a nice spot and every day is unique, and I can always use another addition to my Indian Lake series of paintings.

Painting at Pheasant Branch (Prairie Parcel) 8am on Tuesday October 11th

Our next plein air outing will be on Tuesday (October 11) in the morning (about 8 am start) at the Pheasant Branch Conservancy. I know we painted there earlier in the summer but that was in the evening and not many painters showed up. So let’s try the morning this time. Afterwards, I’m hoping I can get a few people together to go to lunch at the Craftsman Tap that’s nearby off of M (Century Ave.). The Pheasant Branch park area we’ll paint at is right off Pheasant Branch Road, north of Middleton. There are two parking areas along the road. Go to the northern one (surrounded by fields) not the southern one (see map). There are some areas to set up right by the parking lot or we can walk in a ways near the base of Fredericks Hill, where there are some good painting options. There are no restrooms. There are really nice views from atop Fredericks hill but the path going up there is winding and longer than you'd think it would be. Hope to see you there - Tom Gilbert

Mc Carthy Park - Evening Painting Sept. 29th 4 PM

Let’s try the east side of the County for our next plein air painting outing. On September 29th (Thursday) we’ll paint in the afternoon / evening at McCarthy Park. I plan to get there about 4 or 4:30 pm. McCarthy Park is east of Madison off County Road “TT”. It's near the intersection of Interstate 94 and CTH “N” (see map). There is a restroom. Hope to see you there. Tom Gilbert (See Map on Events Calendar Post)

Hello All, We’ll be taking a bit of a break this week and next but then we’ll paint at Cherokee Park in the morning (about 8 am start) on Thursday, September 8th, to be followed by a pot luck lunch at Marla Brenner’s house, which is nearby. Please note: Cherokee Park is different and separate from Cherokee Marsh Park. Don’t go to the wrong one. I’m attaching a note that came from Marla, followed by a map of the painting area. Note from Marla Address: 1013 Menomonie Lane Phone & text: 608-354-5314 Email: mjbrenner@sbcglobal.net Please bring a dish to pass. Everyone is welcome to bring dishes to the house for refrigeration anytime after 7AM. I will have long table under tent for lunch at about noon. Please bring a chair. I will also provide plates, cups, utensils and napkins. There will be water, coffee, tea and lemonade to drink. Bring anything else you might want. If there are enough people wanting a model I can ask Chloe again. She is having a busy summer and the date may not fit her schedule. But we can try. Please text me if you are interested. See y’all September 8! Marla

Warner Park Beach

We had a beautiful morning and perfect weather at the lake shore yesterday. Didn't like the painting I did but I'm posting a photo showing the morning light.

Painting at Warner Park Beach/Boat Launch 8am Thursday August 18th

Our next painting outing will be on August 18th (Thursday) at the Warner park beach area on Lake Mendota (not the lagoon area), in the morning (about 8 am start). There’s a parking lot on the north end, by the beach or if you want to paint more by the boat launching area we can park on the street. The lot by the boat launch is reserved for cars with boat trailers. I’ll probably head for the boat launch area. I believe there is a restroom by the beach area. Tom Gilbert

Vilas Park Outing

Here's my painting from Vilas. I admit I "chased the light" on this one, but the light kept getting better, so why not?

July 14 Outing - Vilas Park

Hello All,

Our next plein air painting outing will be Thursday evening on July 14th (about 5 pm start) at Vilas Park.  And let’s gather primarily at the west end of the park near the stone bridge or shelter on the pond, or the lake shore near there.  I had actually wanted to do a bit of exploring for new painting sites this year but I’ve recently got caught up in a home remodel project that has sort of turned into the project from hell.  So I haven’t been getting out much.  But Vilas should do. And if anyone has painting location suggestions, please let me know.

Hope to see you there.

DCPAP Outing - June 29 - Indian Lake County Park

Our next DCPAP plein air outing will be on Wednesday evening (about 5:30 start) on June 29th at Indian Lake Park.  This can be our summer outing at Indian Lake and then I’ll probably also do a fall outing there.  The primary meeting area will be the park’s main parking lot or along the road leading into that lot.  There is a restroom and shelter there.  I’m hoping for a scenic, cloudy sky, to add another Indian Lake sky painting to my collection.

Our next DCPAP outing will be on Thursday (June 16) in the evening (about 5 pm start) at the Pheasant Branch Conservancy.

Marshall Park

We managed to get through the morning at Marshall Park without any rain.  Here's my sailboat/sky painting from there, plus I'm posting another recent painting ... just because I like it. I'd entitle this as "Drifting By".

DCPAP Outing on May 31, Marshall Park

This coming May 31, on Tuesday morning (8 am start) we’ll be painting at Marshall park in Middleton.  It’s right off of Allen Blvd. (see map).  We haven’t painted here a lot, and it’s somewhat small and limited in options, but I’m trying not to repeat the painting locations so much this year.  It has a shore on Lake Mendota and in the morning the sun comes right across the lake, so the sailboats (that are always moored there) are strongly backlit.  There is a restroom.

DCPAP Outing on May 19, UW Arboretum

Let’s paint again this coming Thursday morning (May 19) at the UW Arboretum.  I’ll say 8 am start but, I, myself, may be late. Others might want to avoid early belt line traffic, but, whenever, it should be a nice spring morning. We’ll park at the main parking lot by the Park Building.  I know most people like the gardens area but I may also check out the prairie views from near the parking lot.

I also apologize if anyone missed our last outing due to the mistaken painting date on our blog.  My email and the Facebook site had the right date but we the blog date was wrong  and not corrected until the day we painted.

First Painting Date for 2022: May 12 at Viking County Park - Stoughton

Tom scheduled out first painting date for this year for May 12  at Viking County Park near Stoughton.

The park is located just a bit north of Stoughton and the entrance and parking lot are right adjacent to CTH “N”.  You want the segment of hwy. N that is north of the N intersection with 51, and south of the intersection of N and B.  Note that there’s a second parking lot on the north end of the park, off hwy. B, but don’t go there.

We will paint from 8 AM until around noon. There are restroom facilities at the park. There is a dog park there but in a separate fenced off area. Hope for better weather than recently and to see lots of painters there.!

Note - This post previously referred to a 5/21 date but the 5/12 date is correct - TG

About time for another post here and thought I'd share an experiment I just finished.  I like some of the Australian painters, like Ken Knight, and after watching his short demo videos I decided to repaint a painting of mine from a couple years ago that was rather drab and uninspiring.  In doing this I tried to paint with Ken's technique. I'm attaching both the recent reworked painting and the original painting below that.  I think the difference is rather drastic and intend to keep experimenting in this manner.
